Houghton Road, Southern Segment: Valencia Road to Interstate 10
Phase 1 – Conceptual Design (30%)

Work is in progress by the City of Tucson for the Design Concept Report (DCR) and preliminary design phase of Houghton Road from Valencia Road to Interstate 10. The Design Concept Report and 30 percent Preliminary Plans are complete and the design team is currently drafting design concept alternatives.

Recommendations for the Houghton Road improvements are being based upon engineering and environmental considerations, as well as public information gathered during the Houghton Road Corridor Study and public outreach efforts that have been conducted and will continue to be implemented throughout the design of the project.

The roadway Design Concept Report and conceptual design project has several major components including:

  • Design concepts for a six-lane divided arterial section
  • Address roadway capacity, operations, safety, pedestrian, bicycle and transit needs, access control, and traffic control requirements
  • Design concepts for improvements to existing signalized intersections at Valencia Road,
  • Rita Road and Old Vail Road/Mary Ann Cleveland Way
  • Design concepts for geometry layout for sidewalk, access ramps, curbs, curb openings and medians at signalized intersections
  • Tapers and alignment to maintain the existing two-lane Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) overpass, and to anticipate later construction of the bridge project
  • Evaluate existing and proposed drainage conditions, recommend drainage design components, and address impacts to adjacent properties.
  • Preliminary environmental investigations in each Design Concept Report
  • Identify improvements to the I-10 Traffic Interchange to accommodate six-lane roadway
  • Identify utility conflicts and recommend relocations of sanitary sewer and Tucson Water facilities
  • Identify right-of-way needs to accommodate six-lane roadway
  • Prepare design concepts for the greenway linear park along east side, and pedestrian facility on the west side of Houghton Road
  • Develop landscape and irrigation concepts for the Design Concept Report
  • Public involvement efforts for the Design Concept Report and design phases
Replacement of the bridge over the UPRR tracks, with these main components:
  • Design for connection to six-lane roadway
  • Construction phasing concepts
  • Establishment of right-of-way needs
  • Identification of railroad and utility mitigation needs and coordination with those entities
