Houghton Road, Northern Segment: Tanque Verde Road to 22nd Street

The Conceptual Design Phase for the Northern Segment, encompassing Tanque Verde Road to 22nd Street, is currently underway. The following provides an overview of work on current and anticipated projects in the segment.

Tanque Verde Road to Speedway Boulevard:

  • Work is nearing completion on the first phase of the conceptual design that will result in a Design Concept Report (DCR) and 30 percent preliminary design plans.

Speedway Boulevard to 22nd Street:

  • Work on the first phase of the design has been completed and produced a Design Concept Report (DCR) and 30 percent preliminary design plans.

Broadway Boulevard Intersection:

  • Conceptual design is complete.
  • Final design began in June 2009.
  • Construction is anticipated to start in 2011.

The roadway DCR and conceptual design project have these major components:

  • Address roadway capacity, operations, safety, pedestrian, bicycle and transit needs, access control and traffic control requirements.
  • Design concepts for number of lanes, median openings, sidewalks and paths, drainage culverts and storm drain and segments of curbed roadway.
  • Evaluate drainage conditions, recommended drainage design components and addressed impacts to adjacent properties.
  • Identify utility conflicts and recommended relocations.
  • Prepare design concepts for a greenway linear park along the east side and a pedestrian facility on the west side of Houghton Road.
  • Involve the public in outreach efforts for design and construction phasing.

Improvements specific to the Northern Segment will include:

  • Improved intersections, beginning with the Broadway Boulevard intersection, whose final design began in 2009.
  • Widening the roadway to a four-lane divided desert parkway from Tanque Verde Road to Speedway Boulevard, and six-lane divided desert parkway from Speedway Boulevard to 22nd Street.
  • Medians with access-control points to improve safety and reduce congestion for the traveling public.
  • Upgraded drainage facilities to provide all-weather crossings.
  • Rubberized asphalt for noise mitigation and long-term maintainability.
  • Improved pedestrian and bicycle access.
  • Establishment of a dual-path greenway, where feasible, along the east side of Houghton Road as part of the Pima County Trails Master Plan.
  • Bus pullouts for future service.

Background Information

Recommendations for the Houghton Road improvements are based upon engineering and environmental considerations, as well as public information gathered during the state-run Houghton Road Corridor Study and public outreach efforts that are being conducted during the city-run Conceptual Design Phase. These recommendations will continue to be implemented throughout the final design of the project.
